Ein Schmöker für Mädchen
Sie sind ein echtes Glücksbringer- Kleeblatt: Bridget, wild entschlossene Sportskanone; die gerne mal übers Ziel hinausschießt; Carmen, südländisches Energiebündel; Lena, zurückhaltend zartbesaitete Allerschönst-Schönheit mit musischem Talent; und Tibby, klarsichtige Rebellin, die die Dinge beim Namen nennt, ob man sie jetzt hören will oder nicht. Vier Freundinnen, vier Temperamente.
Doch in diesem Sommer, ihrem 16., wird alles anders. Denn da gehen sie zum ersten Mal getrennte Wege. Bridget nimmt an einem Fußballcamp in Mexiko teil, Carmen freut sich auf Vater-Ferien in South Carolina, Lena macht mit ihrer Schwester Urlaub bei den griechischen Großeltern und Tibby wird zu Hause bleiben, um im Drogeriemarkt zu malochen.

Eine Jeans auf Reisen soll es werden, soll von einer zur anderen wandern, sie begleiten in den Wochen ihrer Trennung, als Zeichen ihrer Freundschaft: gemeinsam durch Dünn, Dick und den Rest des Lebens. Und das ist bitter nötig. Denn es kommt eine Zeit, in der das Leben an die Tür klopft, wie sie es sich nicht hätten träumen lassen. Und schließlich Tibby, die im Drogeriemarkt Bailey kennen lernt. Bailey ist 14. Sie hat Leukämie. Und sie wird in diesem Sommer sterben.
Schweres und Leichtes; Irrungen, Wirrungen und reichlich Bewährungsproben erleben die Mädchen.
