Generally solids are crystalline or amorphous in nature. Both the types of solids are of great importance in modern technological applications. Borate glasses have significant applications in different fields such as in transmission, electricity, electronics, radiation shielding etc. Glassy solid electrolytes like lithium based glasses have distinct advantages over their crystalline counterparts. Investigation of ionic conductivity in lithium based glassy solid electrolytes is interesting from practical as well as academic points of view. Since lithium is light and most electropositive, lithium conducting glasses are quite promising for the technological applications. From ionic conductivity point of view and other properties, the preparation and characterization of lithium based glasses was planned to give the valuable information and to fill up the gap in available literature. The lithium based borate glasses have been prepared using melt quenching technique. The structural, optical and thermal properties are discussed.
