Autorenporträt

Lauren Oliver is the cofounder of media and content development company Glasstown Entertainment, where she serves as the President of Production.

She is also the New York Times bestselling author of the YA novels Replica, Vanishing Girls, Panic, and the Delirium trilogy: Delirium, Pandemonium, and Requiem, which have been translated into more than thirty languages. The film rights to both Replica and Lauren's bestselling first novel, Before I Fall, were acquired by Awesomeness Films. Before I Fall was adapted into a major motion picture starring Zoey Deutch. It debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017, garnering a wide release from Open Road Films that year.

Oliver is a 2012 E. B. White Read-Aloud Award nominee for her middle-grade novel Liesl & Po, as well as author of the middle-grade fantasy novel The Spindlers and The Curiosity House series, co-written with H.C. Chester. She has written one novel for adults, Rooms.

Oliver co-founded Glasstown Entertainment with poet and author Lexa Hillyer. Since 2010, the company has developed and sold more than fifty-five novels for adults, young adults, and middle-grade readers. Some of its recent titles include the New York Times bestseller Everless, by Sara Holland; the critically acclaimed Bonfire, authored by the actress Krysten Ritter; and The Hunger by Alma Katsu, which received multiple starred reviews and was praised by Stephen King as disturbing, hard to put down and not recommended...after dark.

Oliver is a narrative consultant for Illumination Entertainment and is writing features and TV shows for a number of production companies and studios.

Oliver received an academic scholarship to the University of Chicago, where she was elected Phi Beta Kappa. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from New York University.

Eine Woche voller Dramen
Lauren Oliver erzählt vom Leben in der Sterbestunde

An der Thomas-Jefferson-Highschool in Ridgeview, Connecticut, sind sie die Stars: Lindsay, Ally, Elody und Samantha, großmäulig, frech und cool, entscheiden, was angesagt ist und wer geschmäht wird. Die verhuschte Juliet zum Beispiel, ihr liebstes Opfer. Und der eigenwillige Kent. Trotzdem erscheinen die vier auf seiner Party am Abend des letzten Schultags vor dem Valentinstag. Morgens hat es Rosen gegeben, ganze Sträuße für die Beliebtesten, mit Spottkarten versehene für die Außenseiter. Abends gibt es Tote. Eine von ihnen ist Samantha. Jedenfalls ist sie das am ersten und ein paar anderen der sieben Tage, die sie in den sieben Kapiteln des Romans erlebt, als wäre sie dazu verdammt, ihren Todestag immer wieder neu zu verbringen. Oder als könnte sie sich aus dieser Zeitschleife befreien, wenn es ihr nur gelänge, Einfluss auf den Verlauf dieses Tages zu nehmen.

Was passiert, wenn die vier nicht mit Lindsays silbernem Range Rover, der von Mary J. Bliges bis zum Anschlag aufgedrehtem Song "No More Drama" erzittert, Richtung Highschool rasen, um der armen Sarah kurz vor Schulbeginn mit einem waghalsigen Manöver den letzten Parkplatz wegzuschnappen? Was, wenn Sam mit Rob Schluss macht, obwohl sie mit ihm nach der Party doch ein erstes Mal ins Bett gehen wollte? Was, wenn sie sich an den Gemeinheiten ihrer Clique nicht beteiligt? Einmal überredet Sam ihre Freundinnen zu einem Abend daheim, einmal verdirbt sie es sich konsequent mit allen, weil sie ja nichts mehr zu verlieren hat. Einmal versucht sie, alles richtig zu machen, und einmal, einfach all die schönen Dinge noch einmal zu erleben, die ihr in Erinnerung und in Reichweite sind.

Sams Verzweiflung wächst mit jedem Morgen, an dem sie durch den Wecker aus dem Traum gerissen wird und ihr Blick auf dasselbe Datum fällt. Dabei wächst ihr Wissen: Sie bemerkt Details, Mehrdeutigkeiten und Ambivalenzen, kommt geheimen Gründen von Häme auf die Spur, findet sich und ihre Clique auf einmal gar nicht mehr toll und den merkwürdigen Kent gar nicht so übel.

Die Kunst der Autorin Lauren Oliver in ihrem Debüt "Wenn du stirbst, zieht dein ganzes Leben an dir vorbei, sagen sie" ist der Balanceakt. Mit jedem Kapitel gewinnen ihre Figuren Statur und Kontur. Und obwohl das Buch bei Sams Blick auf die Welt bleibt, bei den Gefühlen der Ich-Erzählerin, macht Oliver keine der Freundinnen zur Fratze. Selbst als das Großmaul Lindsay schließlich in all ihrer Jämmerlichkeit vor uns steht, bleibt sie mitreißend in ihrem bösen Witz, ihrer Frechheit, ihrer Verzweiflung. Die Autorin muss die moralische Dimension ihrer Geschichte nicht herunterspielen. Sie fängt sie auf mit Tempo und Ton einer jungen Frau, mit ihrem explosiven Gefühlsgemisch aus Kindlichkeit und Erwachsenwerden, Ausgelassenheit und Angst, Wut und Würde.
