Thomas Jefferson soll 1803 gesagt haben, es werde noch tausend Jahre dauern, bis der Westen Nordamerikas befriedet und besiedelt sei. Tatsächlich sah es Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts schon so aus, als sei der Kontinent nach wüsten Indianerkriegen und industriellen Großleistungen gezähmt worden. Das könnte aber ein Irrtum gewesen sein. Denn weitere hundert Jahre später erscheint vielen das weite Land zwischen den eng besiedelten Küsten als Heimstatt reaktionärer, fremdenfeindlicher und schwer bewaffneter Trump-Wähler, also gar nicht so viel anders, als das Revolver-Klischee vom Wilden Westen, das der Bestseller-Autor Michael Crichton in seinem nachgelassenen Roman „Dragon Teeth“ ausgräbt.
Das Thomas-Jefferson-Zitat bekommt der junge William Johnson, der Held des Romans, von einem Unterhändler der amerikanischen Regierung zu hören, der gerade aus geplatzten Verhandlungen mit erzürnten Indianerhäuptlingen kommt. Johnson selbst hat ganz ähnliche Ansichten, denn sein letztes Abenteuer bestand darin, während einer wilden Verfolgungsjagd gemeinsam mit dem legendären Revolverhelden Wyatt Earp und der schönen Emily eine Kutsche voller Kisten mit Dinosaurierfossilien vor Überfällen zu schützen. Das klingt wie der Höhepunkt eines Hollywood-Films, für die Crichton, der Autor von „Jurassic Park“ und „Westworld“, so viele Vorlagen lieferte und auch „Dragon Teeth“ ist vor allem ein Abenteuerroman, aber in der Szene steckt auch, was diesen 1974 entstandenen, aber erst jetzt erschienen Roman wieder aktuell macht: die Spaltung der Vereinigten Staaten.
William lebt eigentlich an der bürgerlichen Ostküste und studiert an der Eliteuniversität Yale, gerät aber wegen einer Wette zwischen die Fronten der beiden historischen Archäologen Charles Marsh und Edward Drinker Cope, die nicht nur erbitterte Feinde sind, sondern beide im Sommer 1875 eine Expedition in den Westen starten, um Knochen von Dinosauriern zu finden, jener Urzeitechsen, über die Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts noch wenig bekannt war und deren Existenz bis heute von amerikanischen Kreationisten angezweifelt wird. So müssen sich die Expeditionsteilnehmer regelmäßig für ihre Glauben an Dinosaurier rechtfertigen, sofern sie als schnöselige Küstenbewohner nicht mit dem bloßen Überleben beschäftigt sind.
Der skizzenhafte Roman lässt Wissenschaft und Kreationismus, Küsten- und Kernlandbewohner aufeinander los. Gegensätze, die so unvereinbar scheinen, wie die Cowboys und Dinosaurier, die sonst auch bei Crichton verschiedene Franchises bevölkern. Der Wettstreit unterschiedlicher Gruppen erzeugt in diesem Roman aber nicht nur gnadenlose Feindschaften, sondern auch Wettbewerb, eine Kerneigenschaft der amerikanischen Gesellschaft, die in den letzten Jahren zunehmend verloren gegangen ist. „Dragon Teeth“ ist darin sehr amerikanisch und sehr unterhaltsam, wie aus einer anderen Welt.
