Christopher Marlowe, 1564 in Canterbury geboren, studierte in Cambridge und war zeitweilig als Agent der Regierung in Frankreich tätig. 1587 kehrte er nach London zurück. Der bedeutendste englische Dramatiker vor Shakespeare wurde 1593 in einem Wirtshaus im Streit erstochen.
