Autorenporträt
Geboren am 30.9.1857 in Matzicken/Ostpreußen; gestorben am 21.11.1928 in Berlin. Der Sohn eines armen Bierbrauers finanzierte das Studium der Philologie und Geschichte in Königsberg (ab 1875) und Berlin (ab 1877) als Hauslehrer. 1882 wurde er Chefredaktuer beim »Deutschen Reichsblatt«. Ab 1883 arbeitete er als freier Mitarbeiter für den »Reichsfreund«. Seit 1897 lebte er in dem später von ihm gekauften Schloß Blankensee in der Mark Brandenburg. Seit der Erstaufführung von »Die Ehre« (1889) bis etwa zur Jahrhundertwende galt er neben Gerhart Hauptmann als führender Dramatiker des deutschen Naturalismus.
