The Author: Richard Cargill Cole received his Ph.D. from Yale and has served as Professor of English at Davidson College in North Carolina since 1961. He has published four books, Irish Booksellers and English Writers, 1740-1800, Robert Colvill's Atalanta (1777) and Savannah (1780), John Singleton's Grand Tour, 1815-1817 (Peter Lang, 1988), and the General Correspondence of James Boswell 1766-1767, and 22 articles in professional journals.
