Historically, the purview extends from antiquity to the present day.
Mit dem Eröffnungsband der Reihe »Ars medicinae - Die Wissenschaft der Medizin und das Heil des Menschen« möchte die Initiative Gesundheit, ein Zusammenschluss von naturwissenschaftlich und geisteswissenschaftlich arbeitenden Ärzten, Forschern und Hochschullehrern, das weite Spektrum der Themen vorstellen, das sich in den Bänden der Reihe finden wird. Gewählt wurde aufgrund der Mannigfaltigkeit der Themen die Form einer Aufsatzsammlung, zu der Wissenschaftler aus verschiedenen Disziplinen eingeladen wurden. Als feldabsteckendes, themen- und problemeröffnendes Leitmotiv wurde für den Eröffnungsband das Thema 'Gesundheit' gewählt. Als Zweck des ärztlichen Handelns ist die Gesundheit historisch wie systematisch das Kernthema jedweden Medizinkonzeptes. Dem interdisziplinären Ansatz der Initiative Gesundheit entsprechend finden sich in diesem Band medizinisch, medizinhistorisch, philosophisch, theologisch, psychologisch und philologisch orientierte Aufsätze aus allen Epochen der Geschichte.
