Social security in India has emerged as an important political agenda in recent years. The two flagship initiatives of the Indian government-the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna-have been welcomed by the citizens and political parties alike. And yet, there are complaints about implementation, corruption and other issues. This book explores the working of these two schemes, and few others, with their mixed results in five states through local level studies.
