The volume touches on ancient philosophy, including Plato, Aristotle, and Islamic philosophy, through to the early modern era and the development of scientific psychology, as well as contemporary notions of pleasure. Lisa Shapiro is Professor of Philosophy at Simon Fraser University. She is the editor and translator of The Correspondence of Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia and René Descartes (University of Chicago Press, 2007) and the editor with Martin Pickavé of Emotion and Cognitive Life in Medieval and Early Modern Philosophy (Oxford University Press, 2012).
