The management of any educational institution implies leading and establishing guidelines that conceptualize the different ways of thinking and acting in all administrative, pedagogical and community processes to achieve the effectiveness of the Institutional Educational Project. However, more than a gift of leadership is required to unify all these guidelines; therefore, it is pertinent and necessary to create an organizational tool that allows to complement and optimize the processes of institutional management. Methods: descriptive quantitative research, taking into account that data and concepts were collected from the application of a closed survey. A transectional methodology was applied, since data collection was done in a single moment and not experimentally by analyzing the variables. Results: The participation of 26 public and private educational institutions evidenced the managerial shortcomings faced by the directors in the creation or follow-up of the PEI. In that sense, it is evident the need to design an organizational tool that allows the monitoring of the processes in the educational institutions.
