Halloween is an autumn holiday with origins dating back to ancient times. While the exact date of Halloween is debated by scholars, many historians date Halloween's start to around the 3rd century AD. During this time period, a pagan festival known as Samhain was celebrated in Britain, where the dead were resurrected. Another early Christian holiday, All Saints' Day, commemorates the Day before All Saints' Day, which fell on the Friday after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Halloween trivia shows that the tradition of trick-or-treating has been a part of America's history since its beginning. Trick-or-treating is a phrase describing the custom of walking through neighborhoods asking for fellow children to spare some change for the "children dressed up as ghouls and ghosts." When a young child would ask for money, he was said to carry in his pocket a piece of candy representing what he had been asked for, and bargain with the children for it. This tradition continued on into the 1800's, when wealthy Americans would go door to door asking neighbors for small scraps of food to take home as Halloween treats.
