T2DM has soared to worldwide epidemic proportions in both Western and Developing countries. Malta (where this project was conducted) is among the top world lumpy league and has high prevalence of T2DM and GDM. The main objective of this project was to establish the association of multiple properly selected candidate genetic loci on multiple genes (some of them have included the non coding part of the genome) to the inflammatory and metabolic dysglycemic process in both T2DM and obesity by studying women candidates with; previous history of severe Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (pGDM) and have…mehr

T2DM has soared to worldwide epidemic proportions in both Western and Developing countries. Malta (where this project was conducted) is among the top world lumpy league and has high prevalence of T2DM and GDM. The main objective of this project was to establish the association of multiple properly selected candidate genetic loci on multiple genes (some of them have included the non coding part of the genome) to the inflammatory and metabolic dysglycemic process in both T2DM and obesity by studying women candidates with; previous history of severe Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (pGDM) and have high BMI. The second aim was to; explore the applicability of the SNploscoring system in determining the genetic risk of pGDM. Regarding the population sample size, the study was well powered with confidence interval 99%.The interplay between metabolic and inflammatory pathways is likely subject to genetic quantitative effects control of multiple genetic loci. This research successfully proofed the concept using allele scoring to assess the risk of developing diabetes in previous gestational diabetes cases. These important results are currently being implemented in additional research projects.
