The idea of carrying out this study became necessary as English is a compulsory first additional language for most of the schools. Most of the subjects offered in South African schools are taught in English; moreover, English is an internationally-recognized medium of communication. One therefore, has to master the use of English to a certain extent so as to be a successful scholar.

Bulelwa Makena graduated from Walter Sisulu Univ, Department of Language Education. The researcher is a principal in a primary school in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. She is perusing her doctoral studies and is a part-time lecturer for Academic Literacy at WALTER SISULU UNIVERSITY, and was once an English tutor for FORT HARE & NMU.
