Professor Smith identifies three main cultural traditions of antiquity: hierarchy, covenant and civic republic. He argues that these distinctive traditions retained their hold over the European educated classes from England to Russia and from Sweden to Spain. He analyzes the chronology and nature of nations, from the ancient world, to the European Middle Ages, the early modern, and the modern eras. He ends with a discussion of the alternative destinies facing modern nations as aresult of their often multi-stranded character.

Lynnfred Smith is a new author who is fascinated with history and science fiction. In 2019, while working for a well-known airline, Lynnfred found himself drawn to write books because of significant present day events which affects our lives daily. He wrote the book Narratives: The Continuing Generational Pandemic in August 2020 to introduce the public to the Ma'riine 4 book series beginning with his new novel Ma'riine: Extinction Level Event 6 (The Medusa Syndrome).
