Hans-Bernd Zöllner wurde 1942 geboren. Nach dem Studium der Theologie war er von 1970 bis 2002 als evangelischer Pfarrer tätig, darunter von 1983 bis 1990 als Auslandspfarrer für Deutschsprachige in verschiedenen Ländern Südostasiens mit Wohnsitz in Bangkok. Er besuchte Birma zum ersten Mal im Jahr 1984 und war seitdem fast jedes Jahr mindestens einmal im Lande. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Deutschland promovierte er im Fachbereich Orientalistik der Universität Hamburg mit einer Arbeit über die birmanischen Unabhängigkeitsbewegungen und ihrer Sicht der zeitgenössischen Welt. Seit 1998 ist er als Lehrbeauftragter für Südostasienstudien in Hamburg und an anderen Universitäten tätig.
