Nach dem Studium wandte sich Jürgen Kind zunächst der Pathologie und der Molekularbiologie zu am Max-Planck-Institut für experimentelle Medizin. Sein psychiatrischer Werdegang hatte auch einen starken wissenschaftlichen Akzent. Über Jahre gehörte er einer Forschergruppe der Psychiatrischen Universitätsklinik Göttingen an, die für ihre Ergebnisse in der Psychoseforschung 1979 mit dem Hermann-Simon-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde. Seine Erfahrungen mit suizidalen Patienten stammen vor allem aus seiner langjährigen Tätigkeit als Abteilungsleiter am Niedersächsischen Landeskrankenhaus Tiefenbrunn.
