Alex Morgan was born and raised in western Oklahoma. He majored in chemistry in college and moved to Dallas to get his master's degree. He worked for an environmental laboratory as a technician and then for a carbon black manufacturer as a laboratory manager. After that, he obtained his doctorate in analytical chemistry.
