A series of vignettes about life in the Victorian times in Great Britain. Excerpt from Fourth Series: "Look here, Johnny Ludlow," said Darbyshire to me-Darbyshire being, as you may chance to remember, our doctor at Timberdale-"you seem good at telling of unaccountable disappearances: why don't you tell of that disappearance which took place here?" A series of vignettes about life in the Victorian times in Great Britain. Excerpt from Fourth Series: "Look here, Johnny Ludlow," said Darbyshire to me-Darbyshire being, as you may chance to remember, our doctor at Timberdale-"you seem good at telling of unaccountable disappearances: why don't you tell of that disappearance which took place here?" I had chanced to look in upon him one evening when he was taking rest in his chimney-corner, in the old red-cushioned chair, after his day's work was over, smoking his churchwarden pipe in his slippers and reading the story of "Dorothy Grape." "We should like to see that disappearance on paper," went on Darbyshire. "It is the most curious thing that has happened in my experience." True enough it was. Too curious for any sort of daylight to be seen through it; as you will acknowledge when you hear its details; and far more complicated than the other story. The lawyer at Timberdale, John Delorane, was a warm-hearted and warm-tempered man of Irish extraction. He had an extensive practice, and lived in an old-fashioned, handsome red-brick house in the heart of Timberdale, with his only daughter and his sister, Hester.

Autorenporträt
Ellen Wood (1814-1887), known as Mrs. Henry Wood, was a prolific English novelist in the Victorian era who gained considerable fame and commercial success in her time. One of her most enduring creations was the 'Johnny Ludlow' series, which included the 'Johnny Ludlow, Fourth Series'. This series, following the life and adventures of its eponymous narrator, was cherished for its vivid characterizations and engaging narrative style, reflective of the moral and social intricacies of the times. Wood's literary style was notably marked by her deft storytelling and her ability to craft intricate plots that often wove together themes of domestic life, social issues, and moral dilemmas. Her most famous novel, 'East Lynne', is considered a classic, and it encapsulated her skills in creating memorable characters and dramatic situations, which resonated with the sensibilities of her large readership. Though her works may not be at the forefront of contemporary scholarship, Mrs. Henry Wood's contributions to English literature provided insights into the values and concerns of the Victorian middle class and remain an essential reference point for scholars and enthusiasts of the period's literature.
