The Internet has proven to be a great resource for the medical community. This text will focus specifically on the Internet needs of surgeons, educating them on how to use the Internet in their day-to-day practice and life. Topics such as the history of the Internet, terminology, hardware and software, search engines, e-mail, clinical trials, literature searches, telemedicine, patient information, and webpages will be covered in depth. A centerpiece of the book will be the extensive lists of annotated surgery-specific Internet sites, as well as general health-related Internet sites and department of surgery sites. The accompanying CD-ROM will provide instant access to all of these sites. This unique compilation of surgery-specific information will be invaluable to every surgeon wishing to make effective and efficient use of the Internet for their practice.

In essence, this book seeks, and to a remarkable degree, achieves the transmission of both knowledge and technical skill in an easily usable and clearly written format. Jeff W. Allen has provided an educational orientation with which he is familiar, both as a recent pupil and now as a teacher of surgical pro- dures. This is not unlike the kind of education that has gone on between trainee surgeons and master surgeons around the world. In this case, Dr.

"This text is an introductory review on the Internet and computers, specifically aimed at surgeons. It successfully synthesizes the information that is of interest to surgeons ... . It is highly recommended as an excellent educational resource for surgeons who are starting to gain experience with computers and the Internet. It provides an important key to unlocking the gates to the information highway that surgeons are increasingly required to traverse." (M. Elahi, European Journal of Plastic Surgery, Vol. 26 (4), 2003)
