When not planted at the keyboard, she likes to take epic walks, play poker, watch baseball, and rearrange the furniture. (author, Chapter 11 and revisions throughout the book) is the author of iPod & iTunes: The Missing Manual and The iPod Shuffle Fan Book and sometimes even writes about things other than iPods. She does the weekly computer Q&A column for The New York Times and is equally obsessed with the BBC World News and the banjo in her spare time. "Das vorliegende Buch versteht sich als Handbuch zur populären Suchmaschine Google. Fast jeder benutzt Google ohne dabei ein Handbuch zu vermissen, denn Google liefert in der Regel selbst mit relativ einfachen Anfragen brauchbare Ergebnisse. Allerdings werden dabei nützliche Hilfsmittel und Suchprinzipien übersehen, die in diesem Buch vorgestellt werden sollen."

An wen sich das Buch richtet

Der Autor richtet sich sowohl an Neulinge, als auch an erfahrene Webbenutzer, die Google effizienter nutzen möchten. Es werden lediglich gewisse Grundkenntnisse im Umgang mit dem Internet vorausgesetzt, technische Konzepte wie z.B. HTML, URLs oder das Usenet werden in einfachen Worten erklärt. Die Hauptzielgruppe des Buchs ist also der Standard-Internetbenutzer.

Das hat mir gefallen

Obwohl es sich um ein Fachbuch handelt, liest es sich dank der witzigen Beispiele und der reichen Bebilderung sehr einfach. Ein weiterer Punkt: natürlich steht Google im Vordergrund, aber es werden auch sinnvolle Ergänzungen und Alternativen zu Google vorgestellt.

Das hätte ich mir gewünscht

Nicht alle Möglichkeiten von google.com finden sich auch in den Lokalausgaben wie google.de. Darauf sollte hingewiesen werden.

Fazit

Ein nützliches Buch, nach dessen Lektüre einem die tägliche Informationsbeschaffung ein gutes Stück leichter von der Hand geht. Gerade bei so häufig wiederkehrenden Tätigkeiten wie der Suche im Internet macht sich der Aufwand schnell bezahlt.Ich halte das Buch auch gut für Interneteinsteiger geeignet (sofern sie der englischen Sprache mächtig sind). - Kai Wurm, August 2004, Linux UserGroup.
