The book brings together, in a single source, a coherent set of quality writings in the field of strategic regional planning. It aims to fulfill a need generated by a renewed emphasis in the UK on strategic regional planning enshrined in new style spatial strategies through recent legislation, including the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Bill (soon to become an Act). This legislation places upon regional bodies demands that they are currently poorly equipped to fulfill through lack of personnel experienced and trained in planning at this scale. In five parts the book looks at the evolution of regional planning, the concepts involved, the spatial implications of regional economic development policies, the methods and techniques needed and finally at how strategic regional planning is currently put into practice in three regions with different priorities. This book will be of interest to students of strategic and regional planning, as well as practitioners and policy makers.

Autorenporträt

Harry T. Dimitriou is Bartlett Professor of Planning Studies at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London and previous consultant to the Hong Kong Government and the World Bank. He is also Director of the Omega Centre at UCL, where he is undertaking a comparative study of decision-making in the planning of mega transport projects in ten countries. Robin Thompson is Director of Strategic Planning at Kent County Council and Past President of the Royal Town Planning Institute; he has worked extensively as a local and regional planner. He was a principal author of the London Plan, the Mayor's Spatial Development Strategy, and is Visiting Professor at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London and heads up his own consultancy firm.
