Autorenporträt
William Henry Hudson, known as W. H. Hudson, was born on August 4, 1841, in Quilmes, Argentina to Anglo-American parents. An author, naturalist and ornithologist, Hudson spent his early years studying the flora and fauna of the South American Pampas. His deep connection with nature profoundly influenced his literary work. In 1874, he moved to England, where he would remain for the rest of his life, immersing himself in the writing and scientific communities. Hudson's narrative style often combines natural history with romantic adventure, a blend beautifully showcased in his novel 'The Purple Land' (1885), also known as 'The Purple Land That England Lost'. This novel, set in Uruguay following the country's independence, explores the landscape and culture of South America whilst following the protagonist through romantic and political adventures. Hudson's work was not limited to fiction; he penned many influential books on ornithology and the countryside, including 'Argentine Ornithology' (1888) and 'British Birds' (1895). His literary style is characterized by a lyrical prose that captures the magic and mystery of the natural world. In 1922, Hudson was honored by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for his contributions to bird protection. He passed away on August 18, 1922, in London, leaving a legacy of over 40 books that continue to enchant readers and inspire conservationists. His work remains a testament to the beauty of the natural world and the importance of preserving it.
