Andy Mulligan was brought up in South London. He worked as a theater director for ten years before travels in Asia prompted him to retrain as a teacher. He has taught English and drama in Britain, India, Brazil, and the Philippines. He now divides his time between London and Manila.

Müllkinder auf der Flucht
Ein Kinderkrimi aus Manila
Wir kennen sie längst, die Kinder aus den Elendsvierteln der Millionen-Metropolen, die den Müll durchstöbern, um wieder Verwertbares auszusortieren. Längst gehören sie nicht allein zum Erscheinungsbild einstiger Drittwelt- oder Schwellenländer. Andy Mulligan, derzeit auf den Philippinen lebend, hat ein aufrüttelndes und schonungsloses Buch geschrieben, Trash , das auf persönlichen Erfahrungen und Beobachtungen basiert, denn er hat selbst in einer Schule für Müllkinder gearbeitet.
Behala, die Müllstadt am Rande Manilas, hat eine eigene, täglich wechselnde Topographie von aufgeschütteten Halden, Bergen und Tälern, in denen die Müllkinder selbst Teil des Abfalls geworden sind, den sie Tag für Tag durchwaten und durchwühlen. Der überraschende Fund einer Tasche mit Geld bringt in die dramatische Handlung große Spannung. Wechselnde Erzählperspektiven, neue Enthüllungen über Korruption, Polizeigewalt und die Taten einer Kindergruppe, immer auf der Flucht, sind Spannungsmomente, die zu einem ungewöhnlichen Höhepunkt der Erzählung führen.    Mulligan zeichnet präzise Charaktere, ihre Beziehung zur Umgebung und einer meist bedrohlichen Erwachsenenwelt, macht kenntlich, dass Solidarität, listenreiches Planen und entschlossenes Handeln schließlich zum Erfolg führen.
