Many people have come to the realization that whatever humankind is doing to secure our future isn't working. Most of us feel disillusioned with our leaders, mistrustful of our governments and institutions, and increasingly despondent about this state of affairs. Our collective behavior and our cultural and economic structures do not satisfy our basic inner needs for meaning, happiness, contribution, and peaceful wellbeing. For this, we must explore transcendence. There is no avoiding the interconnectivity of global economics, business, and politics on our people's wellbeing and the environment anymore or denying the enduring effect of the human presence everywhere we live. Transcendence is an element of the human experience that diminishes our sense of separateness from other people and the rest of nature. Leadership that comes from a place of transcendence and authenticity-from being deeply genuine and transparent-is critically important because, not only does the future of our planet depend on increasing the level of authentic communication among people, but humanity's wellbeing depends on our coming to the mutual realization of our interrelatedness with all other species on Earth.
