His search takes him through the back alleys of Prague, on a tramp steamer filled with criminals that sinks off the coast of Brazil, onto the shores of the island of Dr. Brigil, and into the arms of a beautiful Brazilian woman. As he lies burnt in an old gothic hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Father Augusto helps him to piece together the fragments of an incredible series of events that lead him there. Then he has epiphany as he realizes he was never alone in his monumental quest, and in the end he discovers something far greater than he was originally looking for.
