The protection of civilians is the quintessence of international humanitarian law also known as the law of armed conflicts, humanitarian law or simply put, the law of war. It is a core component of public international law which comprises of rules which seek to restrict the means and method of warfare and also to protect people who are no longer taking part in hostilities as well as civilians in time of armed conflicts.
