As a member of the Ohio 91st Volunteer Infantry, James was first a soldier but he also began to tend to the wounded on the battlefield and work with a surgeon who became his close friend. Moving with the 91st through West Virginia and into Virginia, James was captured at Lynchburg in 1864 and was sent to Andersonville prison in Georgia where he died. The story follows the actual travels of James and the 91st infantry as well as his wife's life in Southern Ohio.
