TB poses significant challenges to developing economies as it primarily affects people during their most productive years. If the adverse reactions are severe, it may contribute to changes in the therapeutic regimen, substantially increasing treatment costs, as well as the number of home visits, outpatient visits, hospitalizations and patients interrupting or abandoning treatment resulting in higher rates of treatment failure and acquired resistance, as well as an increase in the number of tuberculosis cases and, more rarely, in the number of deaths.
