The Illuminae Files 2. Gemina

gut

gut
This is the companion novel to the "Illuminae Files". The story takes place shortly after the events of "Illuminae" and is set on the Heimdall Jump Station, where Kady's father is stationed on. Hanna, Nik and Ella are the main characters here, although Kady and Ezra (and all other survivors of "Illuminae") have a comeback as the stories of the characters interconnect.

What I disliked
- Unlike in the first book, the relationship of the main characters did not seem as authentic as that of Kady and Ezra for example. I felt disconnected from their stories and their relationships. I did not care for the other characters either as they had no personality - they felt superficial and were blending in in my mind. I could have not cared less for the deaths in this book, which was unfortunate.
- Another point that bothered me was the 'cringy' teenage talk of the main characters and some adults even, which I did not enjoy much due to the lack of personality. It just felt forced.
- Some plot twists did not surprise me at all because you could sense some of the directions the book was taking. And most of the events were just written too convenient for the development of the story.
- I could not really get into the last part of the book as I could not wrap my head around the scientific stuff that was happening, which unfortunately took much of the suspense out for me.

What I liked
- Once again, I really enjoyed the format of this book and the little notes and hints. I appreciate the creativity behind it and I love how these different medias tell a story.
- I really enjoyed the fact that this is a companion novel, rather than a sequel. It was great to dive into a different perspective of the events and see how the events of Kerenza influences Heimdall - the destination for the survivors on the Hypatia. What will they encounter when they arrive, if they arrive?
- It's interesting to see how the stories of the first and second book interconnect and let's you wonder what will happen in the big finale - "Obsidio."

Conclusion
Although there were some factors that bothered me and did not like as much as in "Illuminae", I still enjoyed the continuation of the story and do recommend checking "Gemina" out. I am excited for the third and final book and see how the story will wrap up.
Will there be justice for the people of Kerenza and Heimdall?
