This CD-ROM contains contributions from the 8th International Symposium on Crystallization in Glasses and Liquids held at Jackson Hole, Wyoming on 24-28 September, 2006. There is a growing interest in both the basic processes of nucleation and crystal growth in glasses and liquids and the formation and properties of glass-ceramics, materials made by the controlled crystallization of glasses. Since the pioneering work in the 1950's by S. D. Stookey, a wide range of applications including kitchenware, dinnerware and telescope mirrors have been developed, utilizing properties such as ultra-low thermal expansion, high fracture toughness, mechanical machineability, and bioactivity. In addition, there has been an increasing and beneficial overlap between industry-oriented glass-ceramic research and the consideration of crystallization phenomena in the earth and planetary sciences for which partially and fully crystalline rocks remain a mainstay of scientific inquiry. A critical and continuing objective of the meeting and the resulting proceedings is to bridge the gap between the scientific understanding of nucleation and growth in glasses and the various applications of glass-ceramics and other crystalline materials.
