He started a bank in town and then through murder and intimidation began acquiring local ranches. However his key target was Gus and Sarah's ranch as it held the water rights to the entire area. Without it he would not be successful in building his empire. After Gus was shot and nearly killed the family decided to take a stand against Jason and fight for their very existence.
