Peyronie's disease (crooked painful penis) is the development of fibrous scar tissue called plaque inside the penis that causes curved, painful erections.
The scar tissue forms along the length of the penis in the corpora cavernosa.
This plaque (scar) is not noticeable and depending on the severity of the disorder, the plaque can induce the penis to curve making sexual intercourse difficult and infrequently painful.
The plaque of Peyronie's disease is believed to develop after trauma (hitting or bending) that produces localized bleeding inside the penis.
The damage or trauma may not be evident from the outside of the penis.
Some cases may be genetically linked or inherited, passed on from parents to children through genes.
Peyronie's disease could be produced by a combination of both factors.
In addition a number of medicines list Peyronie's disease as a possible side effect.
However, the chance of developing Peyronie's disease from any of these drugs is very low and there is no absolute evidence that PD is related to taking these drugs.
When the penis is soft, the penile curve cannot be observed.
But in severe cases the hardened plaque which is benign reduces flexibility causing pain and forcing the penis to bend or arc during erection.
In most cases, the pain decreases over time but the bend in the penis can remain a problem.
The doctor can palpate the hardened tissue inside the penis caused by the Peyronie's disease.
Mild cases of Peyronie's disease seldom necessitate treatment.
Also, the pain linked with Peyronie's disease happens only with an erection and is normally mild.
If sexual intercourse is acceptable then no treatment may be required.
Possible treatments for Peyronie's disease are surgery and medical treatment.
Some studies have shown that vitamin E and B10 improves PD.
Both of these vitamins may reduce or limit the growth of the scar tissue formation.
