The Wisdom I Can't Teach is the debut collection of poetry from award winning innovator, author, and stroke survivor turned healthcare leader, Dr. Paul Coyne. Written during his son's first five years of life, the collection offers a rare glimpse into the lessons that one wishes to teach their children that are only fully learned from those who know firsthand that they may not be there to teach them. Through seemingly simple rhyme scheme and syntax, Coyne compresses the vast complexity learned from living with a heart disease since birth, being hospitalized and wheelchair bound for part of high school, suffering a stroke while beginning a career on Wall Street, the death of his girlfriend in his mid-twenties, obtaining five degrees in four years in his late twenties, cofounding a healthcare technology company in his early thirties, becoming one of the youngest Chief Nurse Executives in the country at thirty-six, and most importantly, finding true love and acceptance along the way through God, his wife, his family and friends, and in himself. Dr. Paul Coyne is a poet whose life story is as compelling as the words he writes. A stroke survivor who has lived with heart disease since birth, Coyne's personal journey has profoundly influenced his creative work. Coyne learned in his youth of the complex emotions that accompany struggle, transformation, and triumph. First, at age ten, when he cultivated his singing ability after he was no longer able to play sports due to his heart disease. Second, at age fifteen, when he further strengthened his faith in God while spending much of sophomore year of a high school in a wheelchair after being hospitalized due to complications following implantation of an internal defibrillator. And again, one week after his college graduation, when he rediscovered himself after suffering a stroke and moving to New York City in the months that followed with memory loss, aphasia, and right sided weakness. After a successful recovery over the next three years, residual effects of the stroke resurfaced, and he was placed on disability from his career at Goldman Sachs. This unexpected turning point became the catalyst for his remarkable academic feat and his path to nursing and healthcare leadership. Over a four-year period, he earned five additional degrees, a testament to his relentless determination and passion for lifelong learning. This academic pursuit was not intended for personal achievement, but a way to find meaning and purpose, as well as help others navigate the complexities of life. During his first few months of graduate school, Coyne endured the death of his girlfriend. This tragedy deeply impacted him, shaping his emotional landscape and inspiring themes of grief and longing that feature prominently in his poetry. Again, however, he found a new path to fulfillment upon meeting his future wife in nursing school. Through her love, he learned that it was possible for him to be accepted by someone in totality. The sick and the successful. The weak and the wonderful. All of it. And in turn, he better learned how to accept himself. This quest for this balance and acceptance, and the struggle to find it more each day, fuels his creative drive, leading to many of the themes now shared through his writing. After completing his doctorate, Coyne transitioned into a successful career as an innovator and entrepreneur. Drawing on his diverse experiences, he launched ventures that combined his clinical, technical, and business acumen with a passion for improving lives. He then held various roles at academic medical centers and ultimately became one of the youngest Chief Nurse Executives in the United States. For his vast contributions to the healthcare industry, he has become internationally awarded and recognized as a luminary in nursing, particularly for his focus on the mind-body connection and understanding of the human condition.
