I didn’t know the author before. The title caught my eye first; after that, the cover didn’t reveal much, but I had a hunch that I would be rewarded with a good story. Described as a historical novel set in Georgian society I expected some twists and intrigues, mixed with some historical insights about that time. It is actually much more, the author has created a story with such complex twists that you can’t stop wondering where this story might lead to. Surprises happen to be around every corner, leaving you utterly bewildered but never in a confusing way. Everything the author reveals serves a purpose all the assumptions make room for new questions. But only in the end, did all the pieces fall into place, a conclusion that blew my mind because it was so utterly different than I had expected. The author has a way of leaving you with the belief that this is how it will end, only to surprise you in the end with a big blow. Red, the main character, is a stunning girl someone who really knows her way around people. The ability to place the Square of Seven for fortune-telling is one thing, but Red also knows how to play the cards of life to get what she desires. A duckling that transformed itself into a lady with a purpose in her life. An unexpected magical read, quite adventurous that leaves you craving for more.
