The Kibbutz concept has historically been both idealized and misconstrued. Using the story of Degania as a case study, existing historiography regarding the formation of the kibbutz identity is surveyed and analyzed in order to determine whether it was ideology or pragmatism that played the central role in creation of the first permanent kvutza. With Degania facing identity-altering changes, this question is now more applicable than ever.

Autor

Gilad Goren was born in 1984 in the city of Jerusalem. After spending most of his childhood in New York City, he enrolled at Brandeis University, graduating with a combined B.A./M.A. in Comparative history. He currently lives and works in Tel Aviv.
