The descriptions of the cardinal symptoms are clear and memorable, and Dr McKenna provides an excellent account of phenomenology the chapter on neuropsychology is exceptionally good and brings the complicated psychological theories of schizophrenia well into the grasp of almost all MRC Psych candidates and most examiners This book gives a picture of a clinician who knows his subject and patients well. Those readers who work near Cambridge should send their most difficult schizophrenia patients to Dr McKenna; the rest of us must content ourselves with buying this book and applying his insights to our own patients. Professor Robin Murray, British Journal of Psychiatry
Table of contents:
The Cardinal Symptoms of Schizophrenia. The Clinical Pictures of Schizophrenia. The Natural History of Schizophrenia. The Diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Aetiological Factors in Schizophrenia. Pathogenesis: The Dopamine Hypothesis. The Psychology and Neuropsychology of Schizophrenia. Neuroleptic Drug Treatment. The Management of Schizophrenia. Paraphrenia and Paranoia. Schizoaffective and Other Atypical Psychoses. Schizophrenia and Organic Brain Disease. Childhood Schizophrenia, Autism and Asperger Syndrome.
This new edition of Schizophrenia and Related Syndromes has been thoroughly updated and revised to provide an authoritative overview of the subject, including new chapters on the neurodevelopmental hypothesis, cognitive neuropsychology, and schizophrenia and personality.
Peter McKenna guides the reader through a vast amount of literature on schizophrenia plus related syndromes such as paranoia and schizoaffective disorder, providing detailed and in-depth, but highly readable, accounts of the key areas of research. The book describes the clinical features of schizophrenia and its causes and treatment, covering subjects such as:
Aetiological factors in schizophrenia
The neurodevelopmental theory of schizophrenia
Neuroleptic drug treatment
Paraphrenia and paranoia
Childhood schizophrenia, autism and Aspergers syndrome
Schizophrenia and Related Syndromes will prove invaluable for psychiatrists and clinical psychologists in training and in practice. It will also be a useful guide for mental health professionals and researchers working in related fields.
