This made the ranch desirable for a neighboring rancher of Clay's, Willie McLawson. Willie had inherited a 20-section ranch in North Texas out in the middle of nowhere. The north boundary of that ranch was the Texas-Oklahoma state line. Clay felt he needed a new start so he traded his home ranch for Willie's inherited land in North Texas. This story deals mostly with the trials and successes of the new life Clay is making for himself. A number of people Clay connects with help shape the direction his new life is taking. In the ending of the story, he finally realizes Rocky Ground is Rocky Ground no matter where it is.
