The story goes that Pritchard's dog, Pickles, who would chase after the ball and bury it in the bushes, inspired the naming of the game. Pickleball's popularity expanded over the years, and the game eventually made its way to other regions of the country. In 1976, the first pickleball tournament was played, and in 1984, the United States of America Pickleball Association was established.
