Many health science educators are placed into leadership roles with very little training or preparation. The goal of this manual is to provide introductory-level guidance for health science educators who are new to leadership roles or considering one, from IAMSE members who have successfully navigated these roles around the globe. This manual would be useful for individuals who are considering leadership at the Dean, Chair, Director, or committee level. The manual will use first person voice to present leadership topics in a way that feels approachable and easy-to-read, but the chapters will contain appropriate references so that readers have the resources to dig deeper into each topic. After reading this manual, the reader will have a better sense of different leadership styles, development opportunities, and career strategies that are specific to leaders in the health sciences.
This manual will focus on development for the types of leadership positions that IAMSE members are most likely to undertake provide stories of leadership from across the health professions, and this is what makes the manual so unique. While there are many books about general leadership or education, very few works are specifically targeted to new or aspiring leaders in health professions education. Journal articles that focus on leadership in healthcare education are very popular, with one such example from 2020 having over 80 citations and 71,000 accesses (van Diggele et al., Leadership in Healthcare Education, BMC Medical Education, 2020. PMID 33272264).
The confirmed authors of this volume are all practicing leaders at the different levels we hope to reach through our readership. Some authors hold high-ranking positions such as Senior Associate Dean, while others specialize in more programmatic leadership. In keeping with the spirit and mission of IAMSE, we have assembled this list of authors from an international candidate pool, and we are proud of the diversity represented by our final authorship list. The two editors of the manual, Drs. Quesnelle and Huggett, have previously published an edited work together through Springer. A more detailed listing of authors and their specific skills can be found submitted with this proposal.
