Alexandra David-Néel (1868 - 1969) war vor allem eine Abenteurerin und eine "Powerfrau" sowie eine mutige Reisende und begnadete Reiseschriftstellerin. Als Orientalistin und Philosophin reiste sie über drei Jahrzehnte hinweg durch Asien, den Kontinent ihrer Träume. Als begeisterte Buddhistin verbrachte sie zwei Jahre als Klausnerin in den Bergen des Himalaja. Sie erlebte Tibet, seine Menschen vom edlen Philosophen bis zum verwahrlosten Dorfbewohner, und sie berichtete - zunächst in öffentlichen Vorträgen - darüber. Die Autorin hatte sich im Laufe ihres Lebens zur anerkannten Kennerin des tibetischen Buddhismus entwickelt, die mit dem Dalai Lama und Ghandi gleichermaßen bekannt war. Später veröffentlichte sie Reiseberichte und Reisetagebücher ebenso wie Fantasystorys, ein Wörterbuch, eine Grammatik, Ethnografien, einen Thriller usw.
