While North Korea is trying hard to grasp the initiative over the Korean Peninsula using the nuclear development card, its poorly led economy has fallen into a desperate state; furthermore, it has lost the support of the Soviet Union. North Korea is now considered to be on the eve of collapse. For more than 50 years, reunification of Korea has been an issue desired by both Koreas but one that has never been realized due to totally different ideologies. However, the possible collapse of North Korea has made the possibility of reunification more likely than at any other time in the past.
