Fünf Jahre hat der Aushilfs-LKW-Fahrer und ehemalige Nordseefischer Tschonnie Tschenett im Haus "Waldfrieden" in Maria Trens hinter dem Brenner verbracht. Während einer Fahrt über Bellinzona (Schweiz) und Como nach Gorgonzola (Lombardei) wird ihm der LKW gestohlen. Er verwickelt sich so unglücklich in die Geschichte, dass er flüchten muss. Die Wirtin Berta verhilft ihm zu einem Führer über die Grenze: Der alte Kalmsteiner bringt ihn auf Schmugglerpfaden nach Österreich. Tschenett lässt sich quer durch Deutschland treiben und nimmt schließlich wieder einen Auftrag an: Er soll LKWs von Buchs nach Berlin fahren, genauer nach Herzsprung, Bezirk Potsdam. Es ist bald klar, dass es sich um Zigarettenschmuggel handelt. Als sich die Polizei für Tschenett zu interessieren beginnt, taucht er eine Zeitlang im Ostteil Berlins unter und lernt dabei einige der Vietnamesen kennen, die als "Ameisenverkäufer" auf den Straßen der Stadt das letzte Glied des Schwarzmarkts bilden . Als er ihnen zu mehr Gewinn verhilft und die Organisation um die Ladung dreier LKWs erleichtert, gerät Tschenett wieder einmal unter Druck...
