Ibram X. Kendi (Author) Ibram X. Kendi is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University, and the founding director of the BU Center for Antiracist Research. He is the author of many books including Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction, and three #1 New York Times bestsellers, How to Be an Antiracist, which was also a Sunday Times bestseller; Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, co-authored with Jason Reynolds; and Antiracist Baby, illustrated by Ashley Lukashevsky. In 2020, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Keisha N. Blain (Author) Keisha N. Blain is an award-winning historian, professor and writer. She is currently an associate professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh, the president of the African American Intellectual History Society, and an editor for the Washington Post's 'Made by History' section. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Guardian, Politico and Time. She is the author of Set the World on Fire: Black Nationalist Women and the Global Struggle for Freedom and Until I Am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer's Enduring Message to America.

Schwarze Stimmen

Vor zwei Jahren initiierte die New York Times ihr seither höchst kontrovers diskutiertes "1619 Project". Das zentrale Argument der Artikelserie lautete: Die nationale Entwicklung der Vereinigten Staaten fußt nicht auf dem 4. Juli 1776, dem Tag der Verkündung der Unabhängigkeitserklärung, sondern auf dem August 1619, als die ersten afrikanischen Sklaven in Virginia anlandeten. Dieses Datum nimmt auch eine beeindruckende neue Anthologie zum Ausgangspunkt, um vierhundert Jahre afroamerikanische Erfahrung durch einen "Chor schwarzer Stimmen" erzählen zu lassen. "Four Hundred Souls" landete binnen Kurzem auf dem ersten Platz der Sachbuchliste der New York Times.

Die Herausgeber des Bandes, die Historiker

Ibram X. Kendi, hierzulande bekannt durch sein Buch "Gebrandmarkt. Die wahre Geschichte des Rassismus in Amerika" sowie seinen provokanten Essay "How to be an Antiracist", und Keisha N. Blain, Autorin einer preisgekrönten Studie über die Bedeutung schwarzer Frauen für nationale und panafrikanische Bewegungen, haben achtzig kurze Texte sowie zehn Gedichte aus der Feder afroamerikanischer Wissenschaftler, Journalisten, Künstler und Aktivisten zusammengestellt.

Das Buch ist sowohl chronologisch als auch thematisch gegliedert, wobei jeder Autor in einem Essay eine Periode von fünf Jahren abdeckt. Die Beiträge handeln von einem Ort, einer Person, einem Objekt, Gesetz oder Ereignis und verbinden die Vergangenheit mit der Gegenwart. Sie dokumentieren die Konstruktion eines rassistischen Amerikas von der Etablierung der Sklaverei über die Jim-Crow-Gesetze bis zur Tötung von Michael Brown durch einen weißen Polizisten in Ferguson im August 2014. Und sie berichten vom schwarzen Widerstand, von den Rebellionen der Versklavten im achtzehnten und neunzehnten Jahrhundert, der Black-Power-Bewegung und Black Lives Matter.

Neben Porträts bekannter Persönlichkeiten wie Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington und Zora Neale Hurston fördern die Essays zahlreiche weniger geläufige Biographien zutage. Die Vignette der Bioethikerin Harriet A. Washington zeichnet das Schicksal des schwarzen New Yorkers James McCune Smith nach, dem in den Vereinigten Staaten ein Medizinstudium versagt blieb. Mit der finanziellen Unterstützung abolitionistischer Gruppen konnte er in den 1830er Jahren jedoch an der renommierten Universität in Glasgow eine ausgezeichnete ärztliche Ausbildung erhalten und wurde nach seiner Rückkehr in Nordamerika zu einer wichtigen, inzwischen lange vergessenen Stimme gegen die Sklaverei. Die Schriftstellerin Ijeoma Oluo thematisiert den Fall von Hugh Davis, dem ersten weißen Kolonisten, der - 1630 - ausgepeitscht wurde, weil er mit einer schwarzen Sklavin geschlafen hatte. Aus diesem Ereignis erwuchs der die nordamerikanische Geschichte fortan prägende juristische Grundsatz der "one drop rule", nach dem alle Personen als "schwarz" galten, denen ein "schwarzafrikanischer" Vorfahre nachgewiesen werden konnte.

Einer der thematischen Fäden, der sich durch das Buch zieht, ist Sex zwischen "Weißen" und "Schwarzen", eines der größten Tabus des Rassismus. Crystal N. Feimsters Beitrag stellt die bemerkenswerte, höchst couragierte Kampagne der schwarzen Journalistin Ida B. Wells-Barnett gegen das Lynchen im späten neunzehnten Jahrhundert vor. Dieses klug komponierte Lesebuch bietet einen vorzüglichen und originellen Einstieg in die Geschichte Afroamerikas.
