Computed tomography has undergone dramatic developments since its first introduction into clinical practice. Despite competition with magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography still is the modality of choice for many diagnostic problems in the area of the trunk. The advent of new scanning techniques such as spiral or helical CT has even reversed the trend towards MRI, with a return to computed tomography in some areas.
Spiral CT not only improves the diagnostic yield, but also opens up new areas of examination. The speed of spiral scanning makes is necessary to carefully plan an examination beforehand, since there are considerable differences among the various indications. Such individual planning brings a totally new quality to computed tomography.
The administration of intravenous contrast material has become part of the standard protocol for most examinations by computed tomography. The increasing speed of the scanners makes it possible to excellently opacify all vessels in the examination area with a single bolus injection of contrast material. The rapidity, furthermore, improves tumor and lesion detection and has led to an optimization of the protocols for contrast agent administration.
The purpose of this book is to serve physicians working in computed tomography as a practical guide for establishing their own examination protocols. The protocols compiled here for different indications and for the three most important scanner types (scanners with a long spiral, scanners with a short spiral, and incremental scanners) have been developed and tested in a routine clinical setting. Our aim was to present the protocols in a clearly arranged manner for quick reference, which is further facilitated by a short summary of each protocol for orientation.
