Meanwhile, Graham meanders on through life, in this year of firsts without his wife: now come a wedding anniversary, a birthday, and the anniversary of her death. But a first grandchild is coming too and while he can't wait to be a grandparent but he's bereft that it won't be with Ruth. And while he's helping Annie, what will happen to Kitty and Tom? How can he do it all? If Ruth was there, she'd manage somehow. She was an expert at this woman's work.
