The first section is a guide to Pennsylvanian (Carboniferous) age fossil plants and trees found in the Appalachian coalfield of Virginia. It is the first publication on the plant fossils of Virginia. The collections were from the areas of southwestern Virginis, Eastern Kentucky, and a portion of western West Virginia. The fossils are sorted by groups and the specimens sampling sites are listed by coal seam horizon and geographic location. Short descriptions of each group of fossil types are provided. This publication has been designed with the amateur rock hound as well as a visual guide for the more advanced collectors.
