Henry Miller (1891-1980), wurde in New York geboren und wuchs in Brooklyn auf. Nach bestandenem Highschool-Abschluss begann er sein Studium am City College New York, was er kurz darauf abbrach. Es folgten mehrere Jahre, in denen er sich mit einer Reihe von Gelegenheitsjobs über Wasser hielt, die vom Taxifahrer bis zum Bibliotheksangestellten reichten. 1920 begann er zu schreiben und siedelte 1928 mit seiner zweiten Frau nach Paris über, wo ihm Mitte der 30er Jahre der Durchbruch als Schriftsteller mit "Im Wendekreis des Krebses" gelang. Nach Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs kehrte Miller nach Amerika zurück, wo er sich nach Jahren des Umherreisens 1944 in Big Sur, Kalifornien niederließ. Millers literarisches Werk ist weltweit mit vielen Auszeichnungen und Preisen geehrt worden.
