Da erzittert das religiös zementierte Gefüge der neuenglischen Gesellschaft: Elizabeth Stoddards unzeitgemäßer Bildungsroman "The Morgesons" von 1862 ist endlich übersetzt.

In zwei feministischen Klassikern der amerikanischen Literatur lässt sich nachlesen, welche Energien um 1900 noch mobilisiert werden mussten, um weibliche Befreiungsphantasien zu inszenieren: Während die Protagonistin in Charlotte Perkins Gilmans Erzählung "Die gelbe Tapete" (1892) nur im Wahnsinn über ihren Arzt und Ehemann triumphieren kann, eröffnet sich der einzige Ausweg für die ehebrechende Heldin in Kate Chopins "Das Erwachen" (1899) in die Fluten des Golfs von Mexiko. Nicht zuletzt weil auch die Forschung sich immer noch gern an vielgedeuteten Schlüsseltexten abarbeitet, blieb mit Elizabeth Stoddards schon 1862 veröffentlichtem Roman "The Morgesons" ein Werk bis heute nahezu unbekannt, mit dem eine amerikanische Autorin schon dreißig Jahre vor Gilman und Chopin eine verblüffend nüchterne Erkundung weiblicher Autonomie unter den Bedingungen der puritanischen Gesellschaft Neuenglands um 1860 unternommen …
