Amitav Ghosh, wurde 1956 in Kalkutta geboren und studierte Geschichte und Sozialanthropologie in Neu-Delhi. Nach seiner Promotion in Oxford unterrichtete er an verschiedenen Universitäten Indiens und Amerikas. Ghosh lebt mit seiner Frau und seinen zwei Kindern in New York, verbringt jedoch jedes Jahr mehrere Monate in Indien.
